What Google says
In Google's own words: “Conversion tracking helps you find how ad clicks lead to different kinds of phone calls.” (Google help center)
Two sources, two setups
Calls from ads are tracked by turning on call reporting, which routes the ad's call button through a Google forwarding number. Calls to a number on your website need more: a conversion tag plus a second snippet that swaps your displayed number for a forwarding number. Setting up one does not track the other, which is why so many call-driven accounts only capture half their phone leads.
Why it changes bidding, not just reporting
Untracked calls are not a cosmetic gap. Smart Bidding optimizes toward the conversions it can see, so missing calls make it move budget away from the traffic driving them. Set a minimum call length (30 to 60 seconds) so misdials do not inflate the count, and read the full play in why a call from your ad is not a call from your website.
A worked example
Say a call asset drives 200 calls in a month and you set a 60-second minimum: if 130 calls last 60 seconds or longer, 130 conversions are reported. If another 80 people click through and call the number on your website, but the website call snippet is not installed, those 80 calls never reach Google Ads, so Smart Bidding sees 130 phone leads instead of 210.
Common questions
What counts as a call conversion in Google Ads?
A call from a call asset or location asset (or a legacy call-only ad, which stops serving in February 2027), or a call to a forwarding number shown on your website after an ad click, that lasts at least the minimum length you set, or that Google's AI qualifies from the call recording where call recording is available (US and Canada). Calls that don't qualify are reported but not counted as conversions.
Do I need separate setup for website calls?
Yes. Calls from ads are tracked with call reporting, but calls to a number on your website require a conversion tag plus a snippet that swaps in a Google forwarding number. Having one does not track the other.
What call conversions can be tracked in Google Ads?
Google lists 5 types: calls from ads, calls to a forwarding number on your website, clicks on a phone number on your mobile website, clicks on call ads and assets (without a forwarding number), and imported call conversions from a system like a CRM.
Does Google Ads still count call conversions by call length?
Not only. With AI-qualified call leads, when call recording is on (currently only when both numbers are in the US or Canada), Google's AI evaluates the recording and only qualified calls count. If a call can't be recorded, it falls back to your minimum call duration.
Is 'Calls from ads' set up automatically?
Once call reporting is enabled, new calls are counted under the default conversion action "Calls from ads", which is automatically included in your Conversions column. Calls to the number on your website still need their own conversion action and tag.
